CHENNAI — NLC India Ltd (NLCIL), a "Navratna" Public Sector Enterprise, has announced a significant expansion in its power generation portfolio, reaching a combined installed capacity of 6,680 MW. This milestone highlights the company's successful integration of conventional and renewable energy sources, aligning with India's broader energy transition goals.
The company's impressive growth is attributed to its dual-pronged strategy: maintaining a strong foundation in conventional power generation while making a substantial push into renewables. NLCIL's conventional capacity, including its joint ventures, stands at 5,300 MW. Complementing this, the company has established a robust renewable energy capability of 1,380.06 MW, predominantly from solar power.
This balanced approach is a key part of NLCIL's long-term vision. The company's expansion into solar energy not only diversifies its portfolio but also significantly reduces its carbon footprint, contributing to national efforts to combat climate change. NLCIL aims to further increase its renewable energy capacity to 10 GW by 2030, with a total power generation capacity of 20 GW, demonstrating a firm commitment to a greener future.
This achievement is more than just a number; it represents NLCIL's role in energising industries and supporting communities across the nation. By providing a reliable supply of both conventional and clean energy, NLCIL is directly contributing to India's economic growth and energy security. The company has already been a front-runner among Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) in achieving a 1 GW renewable energy capacity. Recent projects, such as the commissioning of the first phase of its 300 MW solar power project in Rajasthan, are a testament to its aggressive expansion plans.
The company's strategic investments extend beyond solar, with plans to invest in battery energy storage systems and other green initiatives. NLCIL is also exploring international opportunities to acquire critical mineral assets like lithium and cobalt to support its clean energy ambitions. This forward-looking strategy positions NLCIL as a key player in shaping a sustainable energy landscape for India.
