In a significant step to modernize Tamil Nadu's agriculture and food processing sectors, IIT Madras has partnered with the state government to foster rural development and innovation. The collaboration aims to transform how food is grown, processed, packaged, and marketed across the state.

The partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed between IIT Madras and the Tamil Nadu Agri Business and Food Processing Export Corporation (TNAPEx), the state’s key agency for promoting agricultural exports and food processing. The agreement was signed at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of Dr Atul Anand, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary of the MSME Department.

Focus on Rural Innovation

Dr Atul Anand emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing rural supply chains, reducing post-harvest losses, and increasing farmers’ incomes. He welcomed IIT Madras’s involvement in creating practical, research-driven solutions that cater to the actual needs of the agri sector.

Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, stated that the institution would bring together multidisciplinary experts to work on improving efficiency, sustainability, and market strategies in Tamil Nadu's agricultural landscape. The initiative will support the sector through research, capacity building, and targeted support in packaging, branding, and export planning.

Key Areas of Collaboration

The MoU outlines several key areas for collaboration, including:

  • Skilling youth in agribusiness and rural entrepreneurship

  • Enhancing supply chain operations and minimizing food waste

  • Boosting local produce access to markets and export opportunities

  • Improving packaging, branding, and positioning of agricultural products

  • Evaluating the impact of government programs on rural enterprises

Empowering Rural Enterprises

Dr K Alagusundaram, Managing Director and CEO of TNAPEx, highlighted the importance of linking rural micro-enterprises with global markets. He said the partnership with IIT Madras would help strengthen the capabilities of these small businesses and increase their competitiveness.

The initiative will be led by Professor Arshinder Kaur, along with Professor G Arun Kumar and Professor Vaibhav Chawla from the Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras. They will be supported by Professor Manu Santhanam, Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research, and Dr Saji Mathew, Head of the Department of Management Studies.

Senior representatives from institutions such as NIFTEM-T, TNJFU, and TANUVAS were also present during the signing, showcasing a strong multi-institutional commitment to revitalizing the rural economy of Tamil Nadu.
