Coal India, AMNS Sign MoU to Explore Syngas Use at Paradip Pellet Plant
Coal India and AMNS will assess a proposed syngas and CCUS project at the Paradip Pellet Plant and prepare a preliminary feasibility report.

Coal India AMNS MoU: Coal India Limited (CIL) and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Private Limited (AMNS) executed a non-binding memorandum of understanding on August 12, 2026, Coal India said in a BSE filing on Wednesday.
The companies will explore the possibility of using syngas produced by a coal gasification facility proposed to be established by CIL adjacent to or at the AMNS Paradip Pellet Plant. The proposed arrangement would be coupled with CCUS, according to the exchange filing.
Feasibility assessment comes first
The initial work under the MoU will focus on assessing the project's technical, commercial and implementation modalities. Coal India and AMNS will also facilitate the preparation of a Preliminary Feasibility Report, or PFR, to evaluate whether the proposed project is viable.
- CIL proposes to establish the coal gasification facility.
- The facility is envisaged adjacent to or at AMNS's Paradip Pellet Plant.
- Syngas from the proposed facility is being considered for utilisation.
- The assessment will cover technical, commercial and implementation aspects.
The filing does not disclose an investment amount, proposed capacity, implementation schedule or binding commercial terms. It also does not state that a final investment decision has been taken.
Non-binding framework
The agreement is expressly described as non-binding, making the preliminary assessment and PFR the immediate scope of cooperation between the two companies. Any evaluation of project viability will therefore follow the technical and commercial review outlined in the filing.
Coal India submitted the disclosure to BSE and the National Stock Exchange of India. The company's BSE scrip code is 533278, while its ISIN is INE522F01014. The filing was signed by B. P. Dubey, Executive Director (Company Secretary) and Compliance Officer of Coal India.
