Mumbai June 25 2025 – The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved Rs 20000 crore for acquiring land and initiating planning for the Nagpur Goa Shaktipeeth Expressway. This 802 kilometre corridor officially named the Maharashtra Shaktipeeth Mahamarg will connect Pavnar in Wardha to Patradevi in Sindhudurg enhancing access to 18 major pilgrimage sites across 11 districts.
The project was previously stalled in 2024 due to farmer protests regarding private agricultural land acquisition. Of the 8419 hectares required over 8100 hectares are privately owned. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has revived the initiative directing the Public Works Department to resume planning and land acquisition. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation will lead implementation.
Beyond improved connectivity the expressway aims to serve as a religious and cultural route boosting tourism and supporting economic development in underdeveloped regions such as Vidarbha Marathwada and western Maharashtra. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 80000 crore.
