The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the construction of the Badvel Nellore Corridor in Andhra Pradesh. The project is valued at Rs 3653.10 crore and involves building a 108.13 kilometre long four lane corridor to enhance strategic connectivity and industrial development in the region.
The corridor will start from Gopavaram Village on the existing National Highway 67 in YSR Kadapa District and end at Krishnapatnam Port Junction on National Highway 16 in SPSR Nellore District. It aims to significantly improve access to the Krishnapatnam Port which is a key node under the Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor.
The new corridor is expected to reduce the current travel distance to the port by 33.9 kilometres from 142 kilometres to 108.13 kilometres cutting travel time by approximately one hour. This will ease cargo movement and improve logistical efficiency.
Additionally the corridor will facilitate access to several major industrial nodes in Andhra Pradesh including the Kopparthy Node under the Visakhapatnam Chennai Industrial Corridor the Orvakal Node under the Hyderabad Bengaluru Industrial Corridor and the Krishnapatnam Node under the Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor.
The project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities with around 20 lakh man days of direct employment and 23 lakh man days of indirect employment.
In addition the Cabinet has also approved two railway multi tracking projects worth Rs 3399 crore. These projects aim to make passenger and freight transport more efficient across the Indian Railways network and are scheduled for completion by 2029 to 2030.
According to the government these railway upgrades will help reduce logistics costs cut oil imports and lower carbon emissions contributing to a more sustainable and efficient transportation system and supporting stronger economic growth.
