In a significant move to enhance urban transportation in Pune, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the expansion of Pune Metro Line 2. The project involves a substantial investment of Rs 3626 crore and is aimed at improving east-west connectivity by linking central Pune with rapidly growing suburban areas.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision, highlighting that India now ranks among the top three countries globally in terms of metro network size and scale. Pune, the second-largest city in Maharashtra and ninth in India by population, continues to witness increasing demand for modern and integrated public transport solutions.
The approved expansion includes an additional 12.75 kilometres of track and 13 new stations. The extended corridor will connect key areas such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, which are emerging as major residential, commercial, and IT hubs.
This development builds upon the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi corridor under Phase 1 of the Pune Metro, which spans 33.3 kilometres. An additional 33 kilometres of metro lines are also currently under construction across the city.
The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel times, and provide a sustainable alternative to road transport. With this move, Pune is set to strengthen its position as a modern, well-connected urban centre, in line with national objectives for eco-friendly and efficient city transport systems.
