Indian Railways marked a significant milestone in freight mobility as Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Loco Manufacturing Shop at the Rolling Stock Workshop in Dahod, Gujarat. The facility is designed to produce 1,200 high-powered electric freight locomotives, each with a capacity of 9000 horsepower.
During the ceremony, PM Modi flagged off the first electric locomotive produced at the workshop. This event symbolizes a major advancement in India’s freight transportation, promising improved speeds, greater hauling capacity, and enhanced sustainability.
These newly introduced locomotives can haul between 4,500 and 5,000 tonnes, even on steep gradients. This capability is expected to transform heavy-duty freight movement across the country. The locomotives are equipped with advanced IGBT-based propulsion technology, ensuring high energy efficiency and reliable performance.
Developed under the Make in India initiative, the new locomotives demonstrate India's growing engineering strength and commitment to modernizing rail infrastructure. With these powerful additions, Indian Railways is set to become a leader in efficient, eco-friendly freight logistics.
