The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has reached a major technological breakthrough by successfully completing a long-duration ground test of an Active Cooled Scramjet Subscale Combustor. The test, which lasted over 1,000 seconds, was carried out at DRDO’s newly established Scramjet Connect Test Facility in Hyderabad.

Advancing Hypersonic Propulsion

This successful trial marks a crucial step toward the development of a full-scale, flight-ready scramjet combustor. The scramjet technology is key to powering hypersonic cruise missiles—advanced weapon systems capable of traveling at speeds greater than Mach 5 (over 6,100 km/h) for extended periods.

Scramjets (supersonic combustion ramjets) are a type of air-breathing propulsion system that enable sustained high-speed flight by allowing combustion to occur at supersonic speeds. This test showcases India’s growing capabilities in developing next-generation aerospace propulsion systems.

 

A Big Leap for Indigenous Defence

With this achievement, DRDO is closer to enabling the development of indigenous hypersonic cruise missiles, significantly enhancing India’s strategic deterrence and long-range strike capability.
