Coal India Fine: BSE, NSE Levy Rs 12.66 Lakh Each for SEBI LODR Non-Compliance
Coal India faces fines of Rs 12.66 lakh each from BSE and NSE over SEBI LODR non-compliance for the June 2026 quarter; it has sought a waiver.

Coal India fine: Coal India Limited informed the exchanges in a BSE filing dated August 26, 2026, that BSE and the National Stock Exchange of India have imposed a fine of Rs 12,66,140 each, inclusive of GST, for non-compliance with several provisions of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations, 2015, for the quarter ended June 30, 2026.
The state-owned coal producer said it received notices from both exchanges on August 25, 2026. The filing quantified the financial implication at Rs 12,66,140 for each exchange, inclusive of GST.
SEBI LODR provisions cited by exchanges
According to the disclosure, the notices relate to non-compliance with regulations governing the board and its committees. The provisions cited were:
- Regulation 17(1) and Regulation 17(2A)
- Regulation 18(1)
- Regulation 19(1) and Regulation 19(2)
- Regulation 20(2)/(2A)
- Regulation 21(2)
Coal India Limited said the non-compliance was neither caused by negligence or default on the company’s part nor within the control of its management. It added that continuous efforts had been made to meet the applicable compliance requirements.
The filing did not identify any operational impact beyond the stated financial implication of the fines.
Coal India seeks waiver from BSE
Coal India explained that it is a government company under the administrative control of the Ministry of Coal. Under the company’s Articles of Association, all members of its board are appointed by the President of India, placing those appointments outside the purview of Coal India’s management.
The company said it has been regularly following up with the Ministry of Coal for the appointment of the requisite number of independent directors to its board. It has also requested BSE to waive the penalty.
Coal India noted that waiver requests had been considered favourably by the exchanges in the past. The latest filing, however, only states that a waiver has been requested and does not report any decision on that request.
The disclosure was submitted under Regulation 30 of SEBI LODR and signed by B. P. Dubey, Executive Director (Company Secretary) and Compliance Officer. Coal India’s shares are listed on BSE under scrip code 533278, while its ISIN is INE522F01014.
