Jindal Power, supported by billionaire industrialist Naveen Jindal, is exploring entry into India’s power distribution sector, according to sources familiar with the matter. The move marks a significant strategic shift for the company, which has traditionally focused on power generation.
The company may enter the distribution business by participating in competitive bidding processes for distribution licenses or through opportunities that arise from the privatisation of existing discoms.
One such opportunity lies in Uttar Pradesh, where the state government is in the process of privatising two major distribution companies — Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam. The government plans to offload a 51 percent stake in each, with the process expected to conclude later this year. Multiple large conglomerates, including the Adani Group, have shown interest in the bidding.
In addition to its plans in distribution, Jindal Power is also in advanced negotiations to acquire Jhajjar Power Ltd, a thermal power asset. The acquisition would further strengthen its generation portfolio.
Meanwhile, the group is looking to make a bold entry into nuclear energy. Jindal Nuclear, a new arm of the company, is planning to build up to 18 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity over the next two decades, signaling the group’s long-term commitment to clean and sustainable energy.
These moves align with the Naveen Jindal Group’s broader strategy of expanding its footprint across the energy value chain, from generation to distribution, while also investing in future-ready technologies like nuclear power.
