India has taken a major step in the global green energy transition by announcing the export of 4.12 lakh tonnes of Green Hydrogen derivatives to Japan and Singapore. The announcement was made by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, during the launch of India’s Green Hydrogen certification scheme.
The newly launched certification scheme is designed to ensure standardisation and credibility in the production and export of Green Hydrogen. It outlines a comprehensive methodology for the measurement, monitoring, reporting, on-site verification, and certification of Green Hydrogen, aligning with international best practices.
The exports are part of India’s broader push under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which was launched on January 4, 2023, with an ambitious outlay of ₹19,744 crore extending up to FY 2029–30. The mission aims to position India as a global hub for Green Hydrogen production and export while promoting self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) in clean energy, reducing fossil fuel dependency, and driving economic decarbonisation.
Minister Joshi also highlighted ongoing discussions with various states to sign Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for renewable energy. Coordination with the Ministry of Power and the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) is underway to address and resolve pending regulatory issues.
In a related development, the Minister chaired a workshop on the National Green Hydrogen Mission focused on opportunities for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). He encouraged MSMEs to actively participate in the decentralised integration of renewable energy, which can spur local employment and foster grassroots innovation in clean energy technologies.
This move underscores India's growing leadership in the global green energy landscape and its commitment to sustainable, low-carbon growth.
