As military tensions between India and Pakistan intensify following the launch of Operation Sindoor the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP is facing strong criticism for allegedly attempting to politicise the ongoing national security crisis through a controversial social media campaign

On May 9 while border regions remained tense amid a high-stakes standoff between the two nuclear-armed nations the BJP shared a video highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modis assertive approach to cross-border terrorism The video drew a sharp contrast between Modis military actions and what it described as the Congress-led United Progressive Alliances UPA softer response to past terror incidents

The campaign referenced several major attacks under the UPA government including the 2005 Delhi blasts the 2006 Mumbai train bombings the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the 2010 Pune blast suggesting a lack of decisive action during that period

In contrast the BJP praised Modis track record of rejecting peace talks in favour of precision strikes targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir

However the tone and timing of the campaign drew widespread condemnation including from political analysts and commentators known to be sympathetic to the party

Psephologist Yashwant Deshmukh criticised the campaign on X formerly Twitter describing it as absolutely disgraceful He warned that such messaging could undermine national unity and provide Pakistan with a narrative advantage at a sensitive time

Pakistani media is saying you are doing all this for your own political gains and this kind of campaign gives them legitimacy This is not the time for political differences but a time to take everyone along Deshmukh posted

The controversy comes as India continues to maintain a state of high alert along its borders with the focus on national security coordination and public solidarity
