ndira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to collaborate on Project Udaan. This initiative aims to expand multilingual education by using artificial intelligence to translate academic and technical content into various Indian languages.
Project Udaan uses advanced AI technologies such as optical character recognition, layout preservation, and domain-specific glossaries. It also includes human-in-the-loop editing to ensure translations are not only accurate but also culturally sensitive and contextually appropriate.
This collaboration is in line with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable education. One of the policy’s key goals is to promote Indian languages and make learning resources more accessible to students from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
Key Benefits of Project Udaan:
Delivers high-quality translations of technical and academic content into Indian languages
Enhances access to IGNOU’s digital educational resources across language groups
Maintains original formatting and context through AI-driven tools
Supports NEP 2020 goals on multilingual and inclusive education
Involves human editors to ensure accuracy and cultural relevance
Through this partnership, IGNOU and IIT Bombay aim to ensure that language is no longer a barrier to quality higher education, creating a more inclusive academic environment for learners across India.
