HDFC Bank LIC stake can rise to as much as 9.99% of the bank's paid-up share capital or voting rights after the Reserve Bank of India granted its approval, HDFC Bank said in a BSE filing on August 19, 2026.

The approval was communicated by the RBI through a letter dated August 19, 2026. It relates to an application made by Life Insurance Corporation of India to the central bank for permission to acquire an aggregate holding up to the specified ceiling in HDFC Bank.

The disclosure was submitted to BSE Limited and the National Stock Exchange of India under the SEBI Listing Regulations. HDFC Bank trades under BSE scrip code 500180 and NSE symbol HDFCBANK.

LIC currently holds 4.11% in HDFC Bank

According to the latest beneficial position cited in the filing, LIC held 4.11% of HDFC Bank's total share capital as of August 14, 2026. The RBI approval permits an aggregate holding of up to 9.99%; the filing does not state that LIC has already increased its stake to that level.

The permitted ceiling covers LIC's holding in either the bank's paid-up share capital or voting rights. HDFC Bank did not disclose any proposed transaction schedule, acquisition price or additional quantity of shares in the exchange intimation.
