In a dramatic turn of events during the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2, Shreyas Iyer led from the front with a sensational 87-run knock to help Punjab Kings defeat Mumbai Indians and secure a spot in the IPL final. Supported by Nehal Wadhera’s quickfire 48, PBKS chased down a steep target of 204 and marched into their second IPL final, where they will face Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Mumbai Indians had earlier posted a strong total of 203 for 6 in 20 overs, looking dominant in the knockout clash. However, Iyer’s calm and composed innings once again proved why he is regarded as PBKS’s top performer this season, having scored over 600 runs so far.

Despite the victory, the night ended on a sour note for the PBKS captain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) penalized Shreyas Iyer for breaching the IPL code of conduct due to a slow over rate. He was fined Rs 24 lakh. Additionally, the rest of the playing XI members were each fined Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever is lower.

The Mumbai Indians also faced similar disciplinary action. Captain Hardik Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh for the same offence, while the rest of his team members were penalized Rs 12 lakh or 50 percent of their match fees.

Looking ahead, Punjab Kings will lock horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore in what promises to be a high-voltage final. Neither team has lifted the IPL trophy before, ensuring that IPL 2025 will crown a new champion. While RCB may carry slight momentum after defeating PBKS earlier in the playoffs, the Kings have shown they are capable of bouncing back and rising to the occasion.
