IndiGo has entered into a strategic partnership with Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) to establish a large-scale Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The initiative is part of IndiGo’s long-term plan to enhance its aircraft repair and maintenance capabilities.
As part of the Memorandum of Understanding, BIAL will allocate approximately 31 acres of land to IndiGo for the development of the dedicated MRO center. The facility will cater to IndiGo’s growing fleet of over 400 aircraft and will be equipped to handle both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft. This expansion is expected to significantly improve maintenance efficiency and operational readiness.
IndiGo Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers described the move as a key step in strengthening the airline’s MRO capabilities. He emphasized that the collaboration with BIAL is aligned with IndiGo’s vision to support the long-term growth of aviation and connectivity in India.
Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of BIAL, welcomed the agreement and said the initiative further positions Bengaluru as a major hub in the aviation and aerospace sector. He noted that housing IndiGo’s new MRO facility at Bengaluru Airport reinforces their ongoing collaboration and reflects the region’s growth potential in aviation infrastructure.
The MoU also includes plans for broader cooperation between IndiGo and BIAL in areas such as network expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and joint marketing efforts.
Officials stated that the new MRO facility will improve aircraft availability, reduce maintenance-related turnaround times, and enhance cost efficiency. The development aligns with Karnataka’s broader strategy to strengthen its aerospace and defence sectors.
IndiGo currently operates MRO facilities in Delhi and Bengaluru, and the new facility at Kempegowda International Airport is expected to be the airline’s largest maintenance center to date.
