As India advances toward launching its first semiconductor fabrication plant, Gujarat is leading the charge by building a strong support ecosystem in Dholera. Central to this development is the construction of 1,500 residential units to house employees, vendors, and international experts working on the Tata Group’s Rs 91,000 crore chip project.
Located in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), the housing initiative is being executed by private builders on government-allocated land. Currently, 1,000 residential units are under construction, adding to 500 already underway. These fully serviced apartments offered in one, two, and three-bedroom layouts are targeted for completion by February or March 2026.
According to Mona Khandhar, Principal Secretary at Gujarat’s Department of Science and Technology, 275 apartments are already operational, with 250 occupied by Tata staff and project partners. An additional 225 homes are nearing completion close to the plant site.
India’s semiconductor ambitions took a major step forward in March 2024 when Tata Electronics officially broke ground on the country’s first chip fabrication facility. Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that production is set to begin by December 2026.
Tata Group is the anchor investor for the project. The government is actively collaborating with Tata to ensure infrastructure targets are achieved. In parallel with developer-led housing, Tata has also received a 10-acre plot to construct 530 of its own apartments by mid-2027.
Beyond residential needs, Gujarat is planning global-standard infrastructure to make Dholera a vibrant, livable city for an international workforce. Facilities will include a school, hospital, desalination plant, hotel, and a fire station. A standout feature is the proposed Global Tent City, which will host food streets inspired by Taiwan, Japan, Korea, the United States, and Europe regions anticipated to contribute skilled professionals and technology to the fab.
Additional amenities such as a premium shopping mall and expanded accommodation options are also in development, further enhancing Dholera’s appeal as India’s semiconductor capital.
The semiconductor facility is projected to create over 20,000 skilled jobs, both directly and indirectly. This landmark project is a critical step in India’s mission to become self-reliant in semiconductor manufacturing and to establish itself as a global technology leader.
