Rising Cyber Threats Prompt Urgent Call for Stronger Digital Security Measures Across India

New Delhi, May 9:
India is witnessing a sharp rise in cyber threats, prompting government agencies, businesses, and cybersecurity experts to issue warnings and call for immediate action to strengthen digital infrastructure and safeguard sensitive data.

According to recent data from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), the country reported over 1.3 million cybersecurity incidents in 2024, ranging from phishing attacks and ransomware to breaches of government and corporate systems. Experts caution that the actual number could be even higher due to underreporting.

The alarming increase in attacks is being attributed to the rapid digitisation of services, expanded internet access, and growing reliance on cloud platforms—all of which have created more entry points for malicious actors.

“Cyber attackers are no longer just targeting financial systems. We are seeing coordinated attacks on health systems, transport networks, educational platforms, and critical government infrastructure,” said a senior cybersecurity analyst.

In a recent incident, a major Indian healthcare provider suffered a ransomware attack that compromised patient records and disrupted hospital operations for several days. Investigations revealed the breach originated from a phishing email that bypassed the company’s basic firewall system.

The Indian government has stepped up efforts to counter these threats. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is currently reviewing its National Cybersecurity Policy and exploring collaborations with global cybersecurity firms. State governments have also been urged to set up dedicated cyber cells and conduct regular audits of their IT systems.

Companies are being advised to invest in advanced threat detection systems, conduct regular employee training, and implement zero-trust architectures to minimise risk. Citizens, too, are being urged to practice digital hygiene—such as using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and avoiding suspicious links or downloads.

As India continues to push forward with its Digital India vision, experts stress that building a secure digital environment is not just a technological requirement but a national imperative.
